Compliance Committees

All investigators - undergraduate students, graduate students, professional and scientific staff, and faculty - with either internal or external funding are required to obtain any necessary approval(s) before initiating research and data collection.

Iowa State University’s research compliance program includes the following compliance review committees:

    The Institutional Review Board (IRB)
    reviews research that involves human subjects. IRB approval or determination of exemption must be obtained prior to
    initiation of human subjects research conducted by employees, students, or other agents of Iowa State.

    The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
    must approve all activities involving the use of live vertebrate animals prior to the use of the animals in research or
    teaching activities. Research activities include field studies, clinical trials, the use of blood donor animals, and breeding
    colonies.Teaching activities include scheduled courses and continuing education offerings.

    The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
    must approve any teaching or research project that involves use of recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules,
    including transgenic animals or plants; use of human or animal pathogens (e.g., bacteria, viruses, prions, parasites);
    use of soil, seed, plants, plant pathogens (e.g., bacteria, viruses, or parasites) or other material received under
    a USDA APHIS compliance agreement or permit; use of biological toxins; administration of experimental biological
    products to animals; field releases of plant pests received under a USDA APHIS PPQ permit; field releases of
    genetically modified organisms that are under a USDA APHIS PPQ or BRS permit or notification (e.g., not commercially
    available GMOs).

    The Radiation Safety Committee (RSC)
    reviews any research project that involves the use of radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices.
